Yes, yes, and yes. And the willingness to be spontaneous can save you when changes spring unpleasant surprises. Last year, I arrived at a hotel in New York, only to find that, unbeknownst to me, the hotel had been sold, resulting in something of a disastrous situation. The next morning, I tried to psych myself up over breakfast when I overheard a nearby table gushing over a small hotel down the street. I finished breakfast, called and asked if they had a room available (they did!) and switched hotels. The new hotel was fantastic. It not just saved the trip, it gave me an entertaining story and important reminder that there will always be more out there than what I already know.

Great piece and I couldn’t agree more. The pleasure of returning is something I think more and more about. Even better when the return forms part of the rhythm of your year and then, perhaps, your life.
